Liquid crystals are organic materials which exhibit certain properties of solids (crystals) while otherwise acting like a liquid. Their component molecules can be reorientated by applying a voltage which, in turn, alters the optical properties of the liquid crystals. This "electro-optic" effect has made liquid crystals the material of choice in a wide variety of applications including liquid crystal displays (LCDs), optical shutters, nano-devices, and even fashion accessories.
