Adaptive Windows (AW) alter light transmission through glass depending on the climate; more sunlight is transmitted in cold weather to assist in heating and less sunlight during warm periods to minimize overheating.

AlphaMicron is developing the world's first auto-adjusting AW, which can operate independent of an external power source. This window uses a guest-host liquid crystal system integrated with advanced photovoltaics on a flexible plastic substrate to create an adaptive film which can be laminated to windows, architectural, automotive or others.

AlphaMicron intends, in collaboration with leading national research centers and global commercial companies, to introduce AW to the commercial market by 2011.
